Car Key Repair - How to Fix a Dead Remote
Car remotes offer wonderful convenience for drivers. They can unlock doors, open trunks and even start the car. However, they can stop working at inconvenient times.
Before you head to the dealer, try some quick solutions in case your key fob isn't working. These steps may save you money.
Keyless Entry System
You don't need to search for keys in your pockets or purse. Just walk to your car, press the button on the keyfob, and the doors will be opened and the engine will begin. It's a practical feature that has made the experience of car driving more enjoyable and safer. But just like any device that has a keyless entry system, the keyless entry system may be damaged by repeated use or because of other factors. If you're having problems with your system, you can either visit the dealer or call an locksmith.
Keyless entry systems operate by sending radio signals, and then scouring for a response signal from a key fob. If the system recognizes the signal, it will trigger to unlock the vehicle doors and also activate the onboard computer. Some systems have another transmitter located in the trunk of the car which opens when you move your foot beneath it.
Each key fob has a unique digital identification code, which is assigned by the manufacturer. The fob is programmed with an exclusive process known as "programming". This typically involves turning the ignition of the vehicle multiple times in a particular sequence. It could also involve pushing or pulling different buttons and levers, or the removal of fuses.
Once a key fob has been programmed into your car's keyless system it transmits a digital identity code and a function code that instruct the car to (lock the trunk, unlock it or open the trunk). The car's receiver confirms the identity of the transmitter through an authentication and encryption process. The computer on board will unlock the vehicle and start the engine when it is authenticated.

There are concerns that a skilled criminal could intercept the code that's transmitted between the key fob and the car. This would require a special device to record the transmission then transmit it again in the event that the system doesn't anticipate it. To help combat this, most keyless entry systems rely on a method called rolling code that ensures that every new transmitter signal received by the vehicle has a different counter than the previous one.
Batteries
The most frequent reason for a car remote key fob not working is an inoperative battery. It's a simple and inexpensive fix if you have an extra key fob on your desk to replace the old one with. Most fobs are powered by watches-style batteries, which can be purchased at big-box stores or hardware stores for less than $10. A quick search of the internet or your vehicle's owner's manual should give you instructions on how to take apart the fob that you have been using and replace the battery.
Be careful not to harm any of the circuits or antennas within the case once you've removed your battery. If you do this the key fob could be unprogrammable and won't function. If you must move them, do so with care, as some key fobs come with fasteners that can easily open and scatter key fob parts throughout your living space.
The case of most key fobs is equipped with a single screwdriver hole. To open it, you can use a pry tool. But, to start, wedge the pry tool around the outer edge of the case like you would do when peeling an orange or apple. Be careful not to apply too much pressure since the case of the key fob is typically made of plastic, and it is prone to break or crack when you apply too much force.
Be car key repair service to match the size and type of the battery to the key fob when replacing it. Some fobs require two batteries, while others have just one. The incorrect battery could make your remote key fob useless.
If the issue continues it is possible to try again using your key fob after installing the new battery. If this doesn't work, you will have to determine if the fob is suffering from a more complex issue that requires professional diagnosis. If this is the case, you may require it to be reset by a dealer or you may need to purchase a new key fob completely.
Buttons
The tiny buttons on your key fob are small, and they're packed with delicate electronic components. It's not surprising that they will malfunction from time to time. If the car key button suddenly ceases to function, you can generally fix it yourself.
The most common reason a car remote key stops working is because dirt or crud has been lodged between the button. To remedy this, take out the batteries carefully and scrub each button with an abrasive that is dipped in the rubbing alcohol. Be sure to dry the buttons completely before reinstalling them.
It's also possible that the key fob has been damaged in some way, possibly dropped on concrete or accidentally scratched by a sharp object. If this is the case using an alternative key fob to check its functionality could reveal that the one you have simply been damaged and needs to be replaced.
The door lock sensor might have been unable to function in your vehicle. The sensor is a tiny metal component attached to the key fob's door lock button. It's not unusual for it to break due to weather conditions or prolonged usage. To reactivate the sensor, simply try pressing your key fob a few times without locking or unlocking your doors to reset it.
If nothing else works, you can test the capabilities of a spare key by unlocking and locking your doors with it. If the spare key doesn't work, it could be necessary to find an emergency locksmith who can provide automobile key repair in order to get your remote operating again.
If the car key button is working, but it's still not locking or unlocking your vehicle, you may try to re-programme your computer system. But keep in mind that if you've owned the same key fob for a long time, it will have to be programmed every couple of months to ensure that it is working properly with your vehicle. It's not the most ideal solution, but it's better than having to purchase an entirely new remote.
